Dry Burn is a process that users who build their own coils in rebuildable atomizers such as RTAs, RDAs, or similar rebuildables—rather than using pre-built factory coils—may perform. Essentially, it involves heating the coil wire for short bursts while no cotton is present to clean off residue formed on the wire surface.

However, dry burning should not be applied in the same way to every type of coil wire. Whether the wire used is Kanthal, Nichrome, Stainless Steel, Titanium, or Nickel directly affects the method that can be used.

For this reason, during a dry burn, attention must be paid not only to cleaning the coil, but also to the properties of the specific wire being used and avoiding excessive temperatures.

What Is Dry Burn Used For?

Over time, residues from e-liquid components like flavorings, VG, and PG can accumulate on a vape coil. Especially with liquids containing high amounts of sweeteners, a dark layer can form on the coil surface much faster.

Controlled cleaning on suitable wire types used in rebuildable atomizers can help remove these deposits from the coil surface.

Dry burning is not performed on pre-built factory coils or integrated pod cartridges containing cotton. This process applies solely to rebuildable systems where the cotton can be replaced by the user.

Which Vape Wires Can Be Dry Burned?

Vape building wires differ from one another in their physical and chemical properties. Therefore, the same temperature or method should not be applied to all wire types.

Kanthal A1 Dry Burn

Kanthal A1 is one of the most common coil wires used in wattage mode. In rebuildable systems, it can be heated under control to loosen surface residues on the coil.

The goal here is not to push the wire to the highest possible temperature, but rather to heat it briefly and controllably just enough to loosen surface buildup. Prolonged, intense glowing of the wire should be avoided.

Nichrome Ni80 and Ni60 Dry Burn

Nichrome 80 (Ni80) and Nichrome 60 (Ni60) wires are also among the coil wires typically used in wattage mode.

When checking coils or cleaning surfaces with these wires, short pulses at low power should be preferred instead of long firings at high wattage.

How to Do a Dry Burn?

The dry burn process should only be considered for rebuildable atomizers and compatible coil wires. There must be no cotton on the coil during the process.

The overall purpose is not to allow the coil to reach extreme temperatures, but to loosen buildup on the coil through short applications of low power.

  • The old cotton in the atomizer must be completely removed.
  • The coil should be physically inspected.

Can You Dry Burn Titanium Wire?

Applying a controlled and brief process on a suitable wire does not directly burn the coil. However, excessive temperature can alter the surface structure of the wire and adversely affect the lifespan of the coil.

Why Should a Coil Heat From Inside Out During Dry Burn?

How to Clean a Coil After Dry Burning?

Once cleaning is complete, verify the physical condition of the coil and install new cotton only after the coil has cooled down entirely.

When Should a Coil Be Replaced Instead of Cleaned?

No coil is a part that can be cleaned and used forever. Over time, wire can deform and its surface structure can degrade.

In the following scenarios, building a new coil is more suitable than trying to clean the old one:

  • If the wire is physically deformed
  • If coil connections keep loosening
  • If heavy buildup remains despite cleaning

Can You Dry Burn Pre-built Stock Coils?

Dry burning should not be applied to pre-built factory coils. Since factory coils contain cotton and various insulating components inside, heating the coil empty to high temperatures can damage these parts.

When a pre-built coil reaches the end of its lifespan, replacing it with a compatible new coil specified by the manufacturer is the correct approach, rather than glowing it to clean.

Can You Dry Burn Pod Cartridges?

Pod cartridges using integrated coils should not be dry burned either. Because the coil, cotton, and plastic/PCTG pod body are located very close together inside a pod cartridge, classic RTA/RDA coil cleaning procedures are unsuitable for these systems.

When an integrated coil pod reaches the end of its useful life, the pod cartridge must be replaced with a new one.

Dry burn is a coil maintenance method that only users operating rebuildable atomizers with appropriate coil wire will encounter.

While Kanthal and certain Nichrome wires can be cleaned in a controlled manner, excessive temperature must be avoided with stainless steel. For titanium, Ni200, and other specialized temperature control wires, classic high-temperature dry burning should never be performed.
