What is Five Pawns Castle Long Reserve?

Five Pawns Castle Long Reserve is a special version of the classic Castle Long recipe, elevated to a different aroma layer by being aged in oak barrels.

At the base of the recipe are toasted coconut, Madagascar vanilla bean, creamy French vanilla, toasted almonds, and brown sugar. Light Kentucky Bourbon and American oak aromas complete the warm and woody character, especially in the finish.

According to Five Pawns' current Castle Long Reserve MMXXVI description, the product is prepared in limited batches once a year and is aged in specially treated oak barrels for three weeks.
Castle Long Reserve Flavor Content

Madagascar Vanilla Intense and aromatic vanilla bean character

Toasted Almonds Nutty texture that adds depth to the recipe
Brown Sugar Caramelized and warm sweetness

Castle Long Reserve Flavor Journey
1
Opening: Toasted Coconut

The first section highlights the warm and distinct toasted coconut character.

2
Mid-Layer: Vanilla, Almond & Brown Sugar

Madagascar and French vanilla combine with toasted almonds and brown sugar to create a creamier, sweet, and full-bodied dessert layer.

3
Finish: Kentucky Bourbon & American Oak

In the finish, the Bourbon and the character from the American oak barrel create a warmer and woodier finish compared to the classic Castle Long.

What Does Barrel Aged Mean?

Barrel Aged refers to the product being aged inside a wooden barrel for a specific duration.

In Castle Long Reserve, this process is applied so that the classic Castle Long aroma layers integrate with the woody, vanilla, and creamy character derived from the American oak.

3 Weeks The barrel aging duration specified by Five Pawns for the current Castle Long Reserve
American Oak The distinctive American oak character of the Reserve profile
Limited Batch Limited production Reserve series prepared once a year
Why is Castle Long Reserve Aged for 3 Weeks?

Five Pawns has stated in the past that they conducted various tests on the barrel-aging duration of Castle Long Reserve and determined three weeks as the optimal duration.

According to the brand, this duration provides the right balance for the liquid to take on the oak character, soften the aroma layers, and form the Reserve profile.

In older online descriptions, different durations like 30 days may be seen for Castle Long Reserve. However, the actual aging time specified for Reserve in Five Pawns' own barrel-aging explanation is 3 weeks.
Why American Oak?

While explaining the barrel-aging process, Five Pawns states that they prefer American Oak for Castle Long Reserve.

According to the brand's explanation, the aroma characters derived from American oak—reminiscent of creamy, vanilla, and coconut notes—harmonize with the existing components of the Castle Long recipe.

Five Pawns has also explained that in the past, they used uncharred / non-charred oak barrels during the Castle Long Reserve barrel process. The goal is not to create an intensely smoky profile, but to add the woody character of the oak to the recipe.

Difference Between Castle Long and Castle Long Reserve
Castle Long

The standard Original Series recipe with aromas of toasted coconut, almonds, vanilla, caramelized brown sugar, and Kentucky Bourbon.

Castle Long Reserve

A limited-production version that differentiates the Castle Long aroma family with three weeks of aging in oak barrels and the character of American oak.

Although both products share the same basic aroma family, Reserve is not just a differently labeled Castle Long. The barrel-aging process and the American oak layer are the fundamental distinguishing features of the Reserve.
Are Castle Long Reserve VII and MMXXVI the Same?

Castle Long Reserve has been released over the years with different annual releases and editions. In older product descriptions, one may encounter series names like Edition VII.

Five Pawns' current 2026 release is listed under the name Castle Long Reserve MMXXVI.

While the aroma family shares largely the same foundation as previous Reserve releases, it is not accurate to automatically apply the production and packaging information from old Edition VII texts to the current MMXXVI product. The current Five Pawns Reserve information is taken as the basis on this page.
